Hello, is it me you’re looking for?—
»Hello, is it me you’re looking for?« is an anthology composed of questions asked in lyrics. It contains the questions separated into different categories as well as a song index. It is printed on recycling paper, only using black ink. The production was completely done by me, including the bookbinding. This is the reason the book only costs about 3€ to produce.
»Purpur Passagen« is an exhibition that took place in November and December of 2016 at the »Designhaus«, which is part of Darmstadt's »Mathildenhöhe«. It displayed works of design students based on projects and dissertations from professors and assistant lecturers from the design department of the University of applied sciences in Darmstadt. I designed 3 of the exhibits, the first one being »Ins Freie« (into the outdoors), a color grated and scaled photograph of a street in DoVolna, which features an elderly couple walking into the direction of an arrow stating »into the outdoors«. The photograph was taken by Prof. Dr. Sabine Zimmermann and inspired her to her dissertation and its title. The second one was called »Pretty Papers«, a room-filling collection of all the notes Prof. Dr. Sandra Hoffmann made relating to her dissertation »Well 7 is yellower than Q, isn’t it?«. The last one, titled »Fließtext« (running text), featured four large-sized rolls of paper with the entire literary collection of the dean of the department Prof. Dr. Kai Buchholz (circa 90 articles and books) in tiny letters.
200 facts about 200 album covers
»200 facts about 200 album covers« is a self-produced leporello-fold book, which functions as a visual investigation of 200 indie folk album covers released after 2000. It contains 200 detailed facts about the design of the featured album covers with an emphasis on typography.
The »Osthang« (Easthill) is part of the »Mathildenhöhe«, an art nouveau hub in the city of Darmstadt, which was bombed during the second world war. After that the hill stayed unused and overgrown until the »ASRM« (Architecture Summer Rhein-Main) initialized a 3-week summer school for design and architecture students from all over the world to build temporary buildings. Their aim was to pay tribute to the tradition of building temporary structures on the »Mathildenhöhe«. With the help of renowned tutors from a variety of different countries, the other participants and I were able to construct 5 different buildings. After the summer school was finished I stayed very attached to the »Osthang« (it is placed right beside my university) and I and some other students decided to continue the project. Besides organizing events and concerts, I was also assigned to design the logo, flyer and info signs you can see here.
Questions, Questions, Questions
The »Questions, Questions, Questions« book was evolved during the further development of »hello, is it me you’re looking for?« and continues the topic of questions. It contains an extensive collection of questions consisting of the already used questions from lyrics, the complete questionnaire of Pablo Neruda's »Book of Questions« and every single question from the english classic »Can you forgive her?« by Anthony Trollope. They are also sorted into different categories so that the observer can compare questions from different literary sources. It is also self-produced and the reflecting cover is supposed to symbolize the reflecting character of questions.
BILD newspaper deconstruction
This project is based on the assignment to deconstruct an entire BILD newspaper into all it's different parts (for example photos, titles, articles, cities, ...) I decided to create a website containing all of those parts and connecting them to each other based on the new categories to give the observer an alternative access to the newspaper.
My diploma focused on the question: Are there lyric people, more inclined to listen carefully to the lyrics of a song, and melody people, people satisfied with just enjoying the melody without further knowledge of what they’re actually listening to? After I came to the conclusion that there are, in fact, lyric people and melody people (and all of those in-between), it became my goal to find a way to arrest attention to lyrics even for melody people to notice. I started writing lyric passages down everywhere I went. I wrote them on toilet doors, fences, trees, junction boxes, statues, gutters, street lights, hydrants, walls, bicycle-tube-vendors, mailboxes, road signs, panels and frameworks. Always in public spaces. Always in tiny letters (about 1cm height). Always so that only people who are especially attentive to their environment can find them. I did this so that people can get a new, unexpected access to lyrics. That way, I offered a new way of conceiving and perceiving lyrics, that, at the same time, is quite similar to the way we notice them when we listen to music. The book I made is an homage to the 100 lyrics I used. It combines both the lyric passages as well as the whole lyrics and its design is based on a german protestant hymnal.
